Investigating the sharp decrease in the number of US citizens graduating college with engineering degrees, Raytheon finds that children lose interest in math in their formative middle school years.
Raytheon conducts nationwide review of middle school students and interest in math. William H. Swanson, Raytheon’s CEO, commits to the creation of the MathMovesU initiative to help turn math’s image around for 11-13 year-olds and excite them about math and “cool careers.”
Raytheon provides resources as well as $1 million annually to address the math education crisis in this country.
MathMovesU makes it debut with national attention and Raytheon businesses embrace MathMovesU.

Raytheon creates on line and off line math focused programs.

- MathMovesU.com welcomed 265,000 unique visitors
- Approximately 40,000 students nationwide benefited from MathMovesU
- More than 4,000 Raytheon employees volunteered in MathMovesU initiatives
- The program awarded more than $2 million in scholarships and grants
- MathMovesU supported and participated in 105 events including the MATHCOUNTS National Competition, FIRST Robotics Competition and the opening of the Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon
2009
In 2009, Raytheon is celebrating the year of “Math in Action.”
- Title sponsorship of the MATHCOUNTS National Competition held annually in May, the culmination of an enrichment and coaching program that promotes middle school achievement in every U.S. state and territory, Raytheon also supports MATHCOUNTS teams and sponsors multiple state competitions.
- Sum of All Thrills™ at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World Resort® in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Opening in Fall 2009, the interactive, math-based exhibit will engage children through a fun and educational experience that helps instill a lifelong passion for math, science and technology.
- The Hall at Patriot Place presented by Raytheon, which promotes math and science education through football for the thousands of school children expected to visit each year. Raytheon has developed an interactive learning display named “In the Number” inside the Hall.
2010
- MathMovesU in 2010 is the year of perpetuating Math and Science education programs, while increasing awareness and creating a stronger impact.
