Lou DiGioia is the executive director of MATHCOUNTS® and leads the nation’s largest middle school math enrichment, coaching and competition program. MATHCOUNTS is providing today’s students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.
What is MATHCOUNTS and its mission?
MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, club and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots involvement in every U.S. state and territory. Currently in our 29th year, MATHCOUNTS is one of the country's largest and most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors and students.
Why is volunteerism important and how does it help your organization reach its goals?
Volunteers are the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations, and this is especially true for MATHCOUNTS. Thanks to the efforts of a volunteer network over 17,000 strong, for the past 29 years we have been able to provide fun and challenging math programs for U.S. middle school students to increase their academic and professional opportunities.
How do Raytheon volunteers fit into the equation?
We have been very fortunate to have volunteers throughout Raytheon supporting our efforts at all levels. At the national level, we are honored to have Raytheon Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications Pam Wickham volunteering on our Board of Directors. We also have volunteers from Raytheon serving at local events and states and chapters events in many different capacities. We will even have Raytheon employees helping to score tests at the upcoming Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition this May!
What makes a successful volunteer?
All of our volunteers see the importance of math education in helping students realize their potential.
