With nearly 50 years in the Middle East, Raytheon's steadfast commitment and uninterrupted presence in the region is a testament to the tremendous value we place on being there for our customers.
Our heritage in the Middle East began with a Hawk missile system program award in May 1966 for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and through the years, our base of customers in the Gulf region has grown to include Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and others.
Today, Raytheon has more than 850 employees, including numerous country nationals, across 10 countries in the Middle East. They provide engineering, project management, sales, training and mission support services. Our offerings span defense, security and civil requirements, and include technology development as well as industrial participation opportunities.
The Middle East is one of our most important markets, with countries demanding integrated fighter aircraft systems, air and missile defense solutions, C4I (command, control, communications, computers and intelligence) systems, critical infrastructure protection and cyber security solutions.
Beyond our business commitments, we also share greater goals with Gulf countries. We are especially dedicated to educational programs that foster regional innovation, workforce diversity and economic growth.
These programs include Raytheon's MathAlive! interactive exhibit, which began a five-year Gulf region journey in November 2013 in the UAE and has since toured Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. More than 200,000 visitors have experienced its 40 engaging modules, which are tailored to the Middle East and presented in both Modern Arabic and English.
Raytheon Support of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in the Middle East
Raytheon's commitment to the Middle East region extends nearly one-half century, from the time in 1964 when the first Hawk air defense system was provided.
This lasting and enduring commitment today extends beyond providing the world's finest technology for defense and security. It involves direct support of critical regional issues such as the successful growth and development of the region's technology industrial base, helping to create jobs and provide the youngest population in the world with the finest education possible.
Raytheon's many-tiered MathMovesU program, utilizing a host of engaging learning programs to support Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education in the United States and around the world, is a commitment made with pride and determination. Now extended to the Middle East region, the intent of our STEM education assistance is to bring the best of our technology and people to the region and to provide direct support to educational programs and institutions at all levels of academics.
The information provided here is intended to provide a brief overview of Raytheon's growing set of Middle East STEM initiatives. While we are proud of our efforts and plans to date, we look forward with tremendous enthusiasm to the prospect of tomorrow as well as to helping young people of the Middle East achieve their highest educational goals.
King Saud University
Raytheon has developed a relationship with King Saud University and is working on several programs in support of the university.
The relationship started with a Technology Workshop in March 2012. Raytheon partnered with the professors at King Saud University and the Prince Sultan Advanced Technology Institute, organizing two full days of math, science and technology presentations and demonstrations. The technology workshop featured briefings and interactive demonstrations on current and emerging technologies behind robotics, virtual simulation, laser technology, cybersecurity and other topics. More than 2,200 classroom seats in 20 technology sessions were filled by students and other attendees. By partnering with the Prince Sultan Advanced Technology Research Institute (PSATRI), we provided a workshop that enables students and others to better understand how technology and innovation are driving products and services that will be critical to the Kingdom in the future.
"It is of vital importance that college students in Saudi Arabia, especially those who will serve in the armed forces to protect the Kingdom, receive the finest technical education in the world," said Dr. Sami Alhumaidi, Executive Director of PSATRI, a joint venture between King Saud University and the Royal Saudi Air Force. "We are delighted that Raytheon, an international technology leader, has partnered with us to create this dynamic workshop."
Higher Colleges of Technology
Raytheon has been collaborating with the Higher Colleges of Technology in the United Arab Emirates for several years. The company worked with Johns Hopkins University to establish an Engineering Master's degree program at the Higher Colleges of Technology in Abu Dhabi. Raytheon has sent leaders to speak at HCT's annual and bi-annual events such as "Education Without Borders" and the "Festival of Thinkers," as well as more intimate settings at the Abu Dhabi Women's College.
Raytheon partnered with the Centre of Excellence for Applied Research and Training (CERT) – a part of the UAE Higher Colleges of Technology – to sponsor a Technology Forum in support of math and science education. Held in Abu Dhabi, the forum brought together 150 current and future military leaders, students and industry professionals. Attendees participated in briefi ngs about current and emerging technologies and experienced interactive demonstrations on UAV common ground control, Distributed Common Ground System 10.2, and cybersecurity. The forum provided a unique opportunity for students to network with Raytheon's technical experts.
Raytheon is working to develop a student competition to inspire students to achieve excellence in engineering and technology.
