Technical Director
Customized Engineering and Depot Support (CEDS)
Raytheon Technical Services Company

Joan Mahoney has been working as technical director at CEDS for the last 18 months. In this role, she helps develop the long-range technology acquisition strategies for continued growth in the CEDS marketplaces.

"I'm responsible for developing an integrated technology strategy to support the annual operating plan and the five-year strategic plan for the growth and financial performance of CEDS," Mahoney explained. "Our people are our greatest resource, so it's incumbent on me to create an environment that stimulates the creativity of our bright cadre of engineers."

A principal engineering fellow and 25-year veteran of Raytheon, Mahoney was most recently the technical director for Raytheon Network Centric Systems' Midwest region. In that role, she effected the changes necessary to build technology portfolios and development processes that aligned with the strategic business goals. "I enjoyed the people, technology and capability development, along with strategic IRAD programs and road maps," she said.

Over the years, Mahoney has published several articles on mathematics, design and statistics. Her expertise in these areas was made possible by her penchant for exploring different areas of the business. "It's important to rotate among positions," she advised. "Challenge yourself by accepting progressively more difficult work assignments. Don't be afraid to ask questions of your bosses or peers. It shows interest and a desire to understand."
