Meteorologists, scientists and weather enthusiasts from across the world are gathering in Austin, TX for the American Meteorological Society’s 93rd Annual Meeting. This year’s theme “Taking Predictions to the Next Level: Expanding Beyond Today’s Weather, Water and Climate Forecasting and Projections” will highlight advancements accomplished during the last 60 years that have made it possible to forecast extreme weather events, sometimes more than a week in advance. A special focus of this year’s meeting is the endless possibilities that remain for weather and climate predictive capabilities to decision and support services.

For more than 40 years, Raytheon’s environmental solutions have kept our customers one step ahead of nature’s forces. 2012 marked another year of extreme weather, with the latest Superstorm Sandy only adding to the economic loss and property damage resulting from earlier events, including the most destructive wildfire in Colorado’s history; record-breaking temperatures across the nation; and severe thunderstorms and tornadoes in the Midwest.

While technology certainly does not prohibit severe storms from wreaking havoc on a coastline or paralyzing the New York subway system, it allows civic planners, emergency response teams, the military and every individual in a storm’s path to better prepare for their impacts—saving money, time and most important, lives.
