Raytheon’s Visable/Infrared Imager Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) technology is helping capture the path of destruction of the Whitewater-Baldy Complex fire, which has ravaged New Mexico since May 16.

VIIRS is situated aboard the Suomi NPP spacecraft and took the infrared image of the region on Monday, June 4. The maroon area is the burn scar, which is outlined by the red and white detail of the fire’s hotspots. As of June 6, the fire has burned 412 square miles and is 22 percent contained, despite the efforts of 1,050 people actively involved in putting the fire out, according to the U.S. Forest Service.

From 512 miles above the Earth and traveling at 16,640 miles per hour, VIIRS continues to capture vivid images that have included the Blue Marble 2012, which has been called the most amazing high definition image of Earth, in addition to the companion Eastern Hemisphere image of the Earth.
