International Youth Rocketry Challenge 2010
Date posted: 07/23/2010*
At the conclusion of this year’s Farnborough Air Show there was a competition of another kind — a rocket “fly-off” between the top student teams from the U.S., U.K., and for the first time this year, France, which the U.S. team won.
Raytheon sponsored the U.S. team’s trip to the U.K. The Americans beat out 99 other teams in the states for a chance to compete at the international air show. The rockets fly approximately 825 feet in the air, or the rough equivalent of two football fields, and must safely carry an egg and land — without a parachute.
The “World Cup” of rocket competitions was created to inspire students to get interested in the possibilities of a math and science career in the aerospace and defense industry.
Quotes
“If you could see the students’ excitement when they come to the air show, and read the letters that we get, those letters come back raving about the experience but also saying they want to go to work in the aerospace and defense industry.”

Vice President of Corporate Affairs and Communications“For Raytheon, we’ve focused specifically on middle school, which is where we see a trend that students opt out of studying math and science further in high school and then college.”
