Raytheon recently participated in the seventh annual U.S. Missile Defense Conference held at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C. The theme of this year's conference, "Gaining System Confidence Through Testing," provided a lively framework for discussion surrounding the fiscal and philosophical realities of the new administration and leadership of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).
The conference provided delegates with access to the current state of the worldwide Ballistic Missile Defense System (BMDS), including a review of national policies, service priorities, technical advances and related issues that may support or affect the deployment of the BMDS. Speakers included Senator Carl Levin (D-Mich.), chairman of the Senate Committee on Armed Services, and Representative Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.), member, House Committee on Armed Services.
One of the Raytheon capabilities highlighted at the conference included the Land-Based Standard Missile-3 (SM-3). The SM-3 provides a mature and proven solution to forward-based missile threats by leveraging its capabilities and spiral development as well as leveraging the significant range and discrimination capability of the AN/TPY-2 Mobile X-Band Radar (XBR). At the system's heart is the easily integrated Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) fire control. Several conference speakers pointed to Land-Based SM-3 as a viable solution to counter theater-based threats.
