Revolutionizing Unmanned Aircraft Systems

Unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) are improving how the United States and its allies defend our way of life by extending the reach of our military and civil ISR assets and by keeping troops and civilians out of harm's way. These systems can conduct multiple reconnaissance and surveillance missions, delivering intelligence to those who need it, when they need it, and providing battlespace situational awareness and border surveillance.

The success of unmanned aircraft systems depends largely on the operators, who pilot the aircraft remotely. These operators must control the UAS from the ground, often from locations thousands of miles away. To meet this challenge, Raytheon has combined best-of-breed gaming industry technologies with 35 years of UAS knowledge and expertise to develop the Universal Control System (UCS).

UCS is a next-generation control system that enhances the performance and effectiveness of the operator. Raytheon designed UCS around the operator, rather than building the system and the air vehicle first. The Raytheon approach minimizes many UAS issues by being operator-centric, enhancing situational awareness and operational capabilities to support mission success.

Raytheon enables intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance gathering and target detection and tracking through its Multi-Spectral Targeting System family of sensors, the Common Sensor Payload and the Enhanced Integrated Sensor Suite, which combines electro-optical, infrared and radio frequency sensors for the Predator and Reaper UAS, among others. Maritime surveillance capabilities for SAR-mapping, EO/IR and moving-target indication are being fielded on a number of manned and unmanned aircraft. These sensors offer flexible multiplatform solutions with unmatched commonality, configurability and performance.

Raytheon's UAS offerings now include the KillerBee® UAS for the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps small tactical unmanned aircraft systems and tier 2 missions. KillerBee provides a 5,800-cubic-inch payload capacity, low operation cost, and constant battlespace intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. KillerBee can supply persistent ISR and rapidly deliver actionable intelligence to combatant commanders. In addition, it can integrate with existing ground control systems such as the Universal Control System and the Tactical Control System.
