System runs on Android mobile operating system
Under the headline, “Raytheon Sends Android to Battlefield,” Forbes reports that Raytheon’s tactical mobile platform could be saving lives in places like Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The Raytheon Android Tactical System (RATS) delivers multimedia content faster to warfighters. Now common mobile devices similar to the ones used at home can be used in the battlefield.
"RATS provides our U.S. military forces with a last mile of connectivity for delivering images and full motion video to our warfighters," said Mark Bigham, vice president of business development for Raytheon's Defense and Civil Mission Solutions. "Utilizing existing technologies provides developers the ability to focus on requirements that our warfighters need now."
Raytheon is developing applications for intelligence collection and analysis to be used on the Android platform, such as license plate reading, streaming video camera feeds and biometric collection, such as facial recognition. These applications will enhance warfighters’ safety by providing tactical alerts based on the intelligence collected.
