Andrew Pyke of Raytheon Australia and Tom Baker of Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems faced the press yesterday at a media briefing on integrating an Australian Intelligence Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) capability through the Distributed Common Ground System. The briefing involved senior representatives from Australia’s leading defense trade press publications including Australian Defence Business Review, Australian Defence Magazine, Defence Industry & Aerospace Report, Australian Aviation and Defence Today.

Pyke presented a forward-looking brief on how Raytheon has invested significantly in transferring engineering and ISR project skills to Australia in a capability he labelled ‘a search engine for the intelligence community.’

Baker described, in broad terms, the Distributed Common Ground System Integrated Backbone (DIB) and supplemented Pyke’s brief on how Raytheon’s demonstrator was proving to be effective in showing the considerable potential of DIB technologies in the Australian Defence information environment. Due credit was paid to the support provided under the Skilling Australia’s Defence Industry program for bringing about Raytheon’s ISR demonstrator that is on display to the commonwealth at the air show.

Tom also made reference to Raytheon’s Co-operative Research and Development Agreement with the DSTO that is exposing the commonwealth’s defense science organization to these technologies.

Common themes of the presentation were the importance of open source architecture to Australia’s future ISR enterprise and how Raytheon’s investment in industrial capabilities has ensured that the company is ready to play its part in future projects.
