Excalibur, Raytheon’s precision-guided artillery projectile, has received the coveted Top 10 Army Greatest Inventions of the Year Award for 2007.
“This is an incredible award, because it proves our products change the face of battle. Every day we strive to make innovative technology that will make a difference to the warfighter,” said Jim Riley, vice president of Land Combat. ”Using the Excalibur means the soldier is more effective and collateral damage is kept to an absolute minimum.”
Gen. Benjamin S. Griffin, commanding general of U.S. Army Materiel Command, praised winners for providing outstanding technological solutions to the soldier in the field.
Excalibur uses global positioning system capabilities and inertial-guided artillery projectiles to give soldiers a 155 mm round with precision guidance and extended range. “This was a pairing of an existing weapon system with new technology to provide an essential warfighting capability that is saving soldier and Marine lives,” said David Brockway, Excalibur business development director. “We have the only demonstrated capability worldwide.”
The Excalibur is one of many Raytheon products that provide warfighters with precision capability. The Mid-Range Munition (MRM) is a precision-guided, 120 mm, gun-fired smart ammunition that allows the Army to eliminate targets that were traditionally impossible to engage because of intervening terrain or existing structures in an urban environment.
“Both MRM and Excalibur will provide organic precision with discrimination to the soldiers of every Heavy, Stryker and Future Combat Systems’ brigade combat team,” said Riley.
