The Missile Defense Agency (MDA) awarded Raytheon Missile Systems a $312 million manufacturing contract on March 29, 2011, for the Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) Block IB program.
SM-3 Block IB is the design of the future. With its two-color infrared seeker, advanced signal processor and new Throttleable Divert and Attitude Control System, the SM-3 Block IB will provide an unprecedented level of protection against short- to intermediate-range ballistic missiles. The missile will also be upgradeable in order to meet evolving threats.
SM-3 Block IB leverages the significant SM-3 Block IA investment in development knowledge, engineering experience and production infrastructure, saving the taxpayer tens of millions of dollars when compared to new missile development. SM-3 Block IB, with its discrimination improvements, is a core element of the administration’s Phased Adaptive Approach Phase 2 and will be sea- and land-based.
