Raytheon recently finished an initial series of tests on a new dual-band datalink that will allow NATO to have broader involvement in the Phased Adaptive Approach (PAA) for missile defense in Europe. Because Raytheon’s datalink can be used by both AEGIS and SMART-L/APAR radar systems, NATO naval vessels will be able to carry the full range of Standard missiles—something that is currently not possible.
“This is a great opportunity to combine world-class, European developed naval sensors and combat systems with the SM-3,” said Wes Kremer, vice president of Air and Missile Defense Systems. “Leveraging existing European and U.S. investments provides more territorial missile defense capability at lower cost and sooner than any other available upper-tier option.”
Currently, six NATO allies operate 20 naval vessels that utilize a variant of the SMART-L/APAR system. T
Raytheon plays a critical role in the Phased Adaptive Approach (PAA) for missile defense in Europe and is positioned to help the United States and its allies achieve current and future missile defense goals.
