ASTOR SENTINEL R MK 1 FLIES AT WADDINGTON INTERNATIONAL AIR SHOW

Date posted: 07/17/2007*

Raytheon had a major presence at the recent RAF (Royal Air Force) Waddington International Air Show held in the United Kingdom. The Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR) Sentinel R Mk 1 aircraft, which is being supplied to the U.K. Ministry of Defence by Raytheon Systems Limited (RSL), proved to be the centerpiece of the flying displays.

The Sentinel R Mk 1 aircraft flew twice during the event. It performed in the morning as part of the Waddington ISTAR 3-Ship — with the Sentry and Nimrod R in formation — and again in the afternoon, when it performed a flypast with the Red Arrows.

The public was able to view the latest ASTOR SAR and MTI imagery shots prominently on display at Raytheon’s booth in the exhibition hangar. Outside, No. 5 (AC) Squadron operated a static display of ASTOR ground stations, which was also a big attraction.

RSL’s participation at the air show also demonstrated the company’s commitment to the community, in light of our presence on the base supporting the MoD’s ASTOR capability, which will be operated by No. 5 (AC) Squadron.

Additionally, the Raytheon booth showcased the partnership with the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance. It also commemorated the 25th anniversary of the Falklands Conflict.

Several Ministry of Defence personnel, industry partners (including RSL), and local dignitaries attended the show and were entertained in the station commander’s pavilion. Former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher also paid a brief visit.
