Raytheon, whose satellite terminals protect the U.S. military’s most sensitive data, has been given another important mission.
The U.S. Air Force has awarded the company a contract to develop the Global Aircrew Strategic Network Terminal (Global ASNT), which sends and receives alert messages to bomber, tanker and reconnaissance air crews during nuclear and non-nuclear missions.
“Those messages alert the air crews to spring into action in an emergency,” said Scott Whatmough, vice president of the Integrated Communication Systems business.
Protecting classified data from prying eyes is very complex. But with three decades in the business of secure satellite communications, Raytheon is uniquely equipped to offer the military unparalleled protection.
Global ASNT is the latest in a line of Raytheon terminals that will send sensitive information zipping around the globe via the Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) satellites, soon to be the Pentagon’s primary system for highly protected communications.
The terminals are designed to withstand whatever comes their way, even fallout from a nuclear attack. That makes them one of the most important tools in helping the President of the United States manage the nation’s entire nuclear arsenal.
“Our terminals beam data on the narrowest of beams, making it quite difficult for the information to be intercepted or detected,” Whatmough said.
The Air Force expects to begin fielding Global ASNT terminals in fiscal 2017. Once they go into production, it’ll be Raytheon’s fourth AEHF terminal rolling off an active assembly line, an industry record.
“Thirty years after we built our very first terminal, we’re still the only company that offers protected satellite communication terminals at the highest levels.”
Raytheon stands today as the only provider of fielded AEHF terminals for every branch of the military.
