Mathematics Awareness Month, held each year in April, was created to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. Raytheon’s MathMovesU® program does the same, inspiring students to create a new, lifelong relationship with math and science, one that opens up a world of career possibilities.

Raytheon believes tomorrow’s innovators need to be excited by math and science education today since science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education will strengthen the competitive workforce and move the nation forward on the path to future economic growth and security.

This month, Raytheon will underscore the importance of math by highlighting its MathMovesU fan page on Facebook, teacher scholarship programs, National Volunteer Week and support of math challenges.

New MathMovesU Timeline on Facebook
Established in 2005, Raytheon’s MathMovesU program has inspired students to see math and science in a whole new light. The initiative focuses on ensuring the future of a healthy STEM workforce. Teacher Scholarship Programs

Math Heroes Program
As part of the MathMovesU Grants and Scholarships program, Raytheon selects 32 teachers from across the country as part of its MathMovesU Math Hero Awards program for engaging students in math through interactive and creative learning initiatives. Each winner will receive a $2,500 award and a matching grant for his or her school. Nominate a special Math Hero by May 18.

Raytheon-EiE Teacher Scholarship Program
Elementary teachers and science specialists are eligible to receive a $3,000 scholarship to attend an Engineering is Elementary® (EiE) Professional Development workshop created by the Museum of Science, Boston. This program is intended to encourage the inclusion of engineering and technology education in elementary classrooms by providing access to Engineering is Elementary workshops and materials. Winners will be announced this month.

National Volunteer Week
Raytheon celebrates employee volunteers; during National Volunteer Week and every week we honor people who dedicate themselves to active community engagement through a variety of local and national outreach efforts. Raytheon encourages volunteering because it supports our commitment to corporate responsibility. Raytheon employees across the world volunteer thousands of hours in their communities. Raytheon’s community involvement revolves around STEM, support for the armed services and local outreach.

Math Challenges

FIRST Robotics
Raytheon-sponsored teams are competing in the FIRST Robotics Championship April 25-28, at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis, Mo. The event challenges students to design and build their own robots from a standard kit of parts. The competition and Raytheon's support of the program are intended to inspire students to pursue education and career paths in STEM disciplines. Raytheon engineers mentor and coach students on those teams to design and build their robots in just six weeks to compete in local and regional competitions.

In addition, Raytheon will award $1,000 scholarships to 40 Raytheon-sponsored team members who plan to pursue college degrees in STEM.

MATHCOUNTS
Raytheon will host the nation's top 224 middle school math minds as the title sponsor of the 2012 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS® National Competition May 10-12 in Orlando, Fla. The MATHCOUNTS finalists from across the United States will compete to earn the titles of 2012 National Champion and National Champion Team.

The event will be available live via webcast Friday, May 11, at 2 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on the MATHCOUNTS website. Students will have the opportunity to watch and play along with the nation's top middle school Mathletes®.
