Hosted by Reed Timmer, the star of Discovery Channel's Storm Chasers, Raytheon sponsored a MathMovesU booth at the American Meteorological Society's (AMS) 10th Annual WeatherFest in Seattle, Wash., Jan. 23. WeatherFest, an interactive science and weather expo, kicks off the AMS annual meeting and attracts more than 3,000 attendees. Students, parents and educators come to the event to learn about meteorology, oceanography and other weather-related math and science through fun games and hands-on activities.

As the foremost extreme storm chaser in the country, Timmer showed kids how math and science play a role in the exciting field of storm chasing. With videos of storm-chaser adventures, Timmer spoke to students and parents on how math, science and computers help them chase tornadoes in all locations in the U.S., Canada and Argentina.

"As a meteorologist and storm chaser, I use math every day to track down and research the most powerful atmospheric forces on the planet, tornadoes and hurricanes. Because of a solid foundation in math and science education, I was able to pursue my dream of becoming a storm chaser and do what I love for a living,” said Timmer. “Representing Raytheon Company and Discovery Channel at the MathMovesU event of the 2011 annual AMS meeting, I spoke with students about how much fun math can be when applied to the exciting and interesting topic of storm chasing and extreme tornado science."

“We want to show students that math can be fun,” said Jane Chappell, vice president of Business Development and Strategy, Raytheon Intelligence and Information Systems. “We hope that one day, these same students will pursue math-related careers and be the next generation of U.S. innovators.”
