Raytheon Chairman and CEO William H. Swanson — this year’s honorary chair for National Engineers Week 2011 — and Raytheon Company celebrate the 60th anniversary of National Engineers Week and the 10th anniversary of “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day.” For National Engineers Week Feb. 20-26, Raytheon’s supporting events recognize and showcase the company’s engineers and their achievements as well as promote exciting and educational events across the country.
Turning Ideas Into Reality
Raytheon believes that to remain at the forefront of innovation, the United States needs to motivate the next generation, and generations to come, toward rewarding engineering careers. Organized by the National Engineers Week Foundation, this week is the perfect platform to engage, excite and encourage today’s students to become the engineers of the future.
Companywide Celebrations
At Raytheon, activities are planned throughout the company and around the nation to help showcase the talents of its engineers and spark students’ interest in science and technology.
Demonstrations at Sum of all Thrills™ – Raytheon volunteers will host a series of fun-filled demonstrations using fundamental engineering and mathematical principles at the company’s exhibit in INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
MathMovesU® – As part of its commitment to spur interest among middle school students in math and science, the company will sponsor numerous activities nationwide to encourage students to explore the fascinating world of engineering through hands-on projects, technology discussions and demonstrations, lab tours, and other activities.
Science of Sports – In accordance with the partnership between Raytheon and the New England Patriots, employee volunteers plan weekly visits to 20 teams of kids at 12 Boys & Girls Clubs in Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Rhode Island, to prompt the youth to explore math or science through sports.
Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day – Raytheon is supporting several initiatives designed to encourage girls to pursue educations and careers in math and science, including “Brains are Beautiful,” a STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) event for high school girls in the Denver area.
Scout Day – Raytheon employees will assist scouts in Tucson, Ariz., to complete merit badge workshops in engineering, electronics, space exploration and radio. Each scout works on one badge during the day-long program.
Discover Engineering Family Day – Children ages 5-13 who drop in to this Raytheon-sponsored event at the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., can become creative inventors, engineers and mathematicians for a day.
Math and Science Competitions – Raytheon employees are supporting competitions such as MATHCOUNTS®, FIRST® LEGO® League, and FIRST Robotics.
