More than 300 Girl Scouts experienced the fun of math and science at the second annual MathMovesU® Day Nov. 20. Hosted by Raytheon in partnership with the Girls Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts and Middlesex Community College in Bedford, Mass., the goal of the day was to inspire the girls to pursue studies in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).
Fifty Raytheon employee volunteers along with professors and engineering students from the college taught workshops on electrical, green and software engineering. Girl Scouts learned about robotics, solved puzzles through analytical thinking, and experimented with green technology using their math skills. To mark the day, each Girl Scout received a STEM merit badge from Raytheon following the completion of these hands-on activities.
STEM Role Model
Jim McCoy, Raytheon Integrated Defense Systems’ chief information officer and vice president for Information Technology, introduced the day’s keynote speaker Karen Panetta to the future scientists, mathematicians and engineers in the audience. Dr. Panetta, professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Tufts University, is founder of the award-winning “Nerd Girls” program, which celebrates the individuality and beauty of brains in an effort to inspire young girls to pursue math, science and engineering while breaking stereotypes of smart individuals. During her lunchtime presentation, Dr. Panetta discussed her extensive STEM career with the Girl Scouts and shared the excitement that awaits them if they choose to follow a similar career path.
MathMovesU
Raytheon’s MathMovesU® program was founded in 2005 to spark the interests of U.S. middle school students in STEM subjects. Through hands-on engineering activities, the students are able to unlock the mysteries of numbers while discovering how engineering is capable of solving everyday problems.
