In a ceremony at the nation’s capital April 12, Raytheon was honored with an ENERGY STAR award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for its ongoing commitment to protecting the environment. This award marks the fourth consecutive ENERGY STAR Sustained Excellence Award received, and it marks the fifth consecutive year Raytheon has been recognized by EPA, including the 2007 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award. Raytheon also received the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award in 2003 and an Honorable Mention in 2001.

"Raytheon has earned EPA’s highest ENERGY STAR award — the 2011 Sustained Excellence Award,” said Elizabeth Craig, acting director of EPA’s Office of Atmospheric Programs. “Raytheon’s long-term leadership and commitment to energy efficiency demonstrate the types of accomplishments that we can all achieve in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting our global environment. We look forward to their continued partnership and leadership.”

"This outstanding recognition is a credit to Raytheon's 72,000 employees and their support of our energy conservation efforts," said Raytheon Chairman and CEO William H. Swanson. "The continued focus, dedication and action of our employees reaffirm a commitment to sustainability practices that benefit our communities, our business and future generations."

An Impressive Track Record in Energy Conservation

Raytheon maintains a concentrated focus on reducing energy consumption, which leads to decreased associated greenhouse gas emissions. Raytheon’s strategy is underscored by an enterprisewide energy program that contributes to Raytheon’s growth and customer success, while minimizing environmental impact. Raytheon’s energy consumption per dollar of revenue has decreased by an impressive 22 percent since 2007. As stewards of the environment, Raytheon and its employees achieved many sustainability goals in 2010, including:

  • Qualifying almost 40,000 employees as Energy Citizens.
  • Reinforcing our Energy Champion network of more than 1,500 employees.
  • Reducing energy consumption per dollar of revenue by three percent.
  • Improving our ranking to 75th from 208th in Newsweek’s annual Green Rankings and moving to third in its industrial category.
  • Engaging greater numbers of employees in energy conservation and sustainability efforts through Energy Awareness Month and Earth Day events.
  • Encouraging other organizations to become ENERGY STAR partners.

The ENERGY STAR Program

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy. Raytheon has participated since 1999 in this voluntary partnership between the private and public sectors to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through increased energy efficiency. Raytheon was chosen from 17,000 public and private sector ENERGY STAR program participants for a 2011 Sustained Excellence Award. Raytheon once again successfully conserved energy by employing enterprisewide programs during 2010 that yielded a 2 million kilowatt-hour reduction and led to a 3 million pound-reduction in greenhouse gases.
