The 9.0 magnitude Sendai earthquake March 11, 2011, was the most powerful earthquake to hit Japan and the fourth most powerful earthquake in the world since the inception of modern record keeping. As of March 16th, Japanese authorities have confirmed that more than 12,000 people are either dead or reported missing five days after the earthquake.
According to the American Red Cross, at least 370,000 people have been evacuated or displaced, many of them now housed in nearly 2,000 shelters set up and operated by the Japanese government and supported by the Red Cross.
Because of the scale of the disaster and need for humanitarian aid, Raytheon will make a corporate donation of $500,000 to the American Red Cross in support of the Japan earthquake disaster relief efforts. The corporate gift includes funds from the Raytheon Annual Disaster Relief Fund, a company fund established to respond to major disasters.
In addition to this corporate gift, Raytheon will match all employee donations to the American Red Cross designated to support Japanese relief efforts, up to $500,000.
In total, Raytheon’s support through company and employee donations has the potential to reach $1.5 million.
