Raytheon’s MathMovesU® program marked the one-year anniversary of the Sum of all Thrills™ at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot® at the Walt Disney World® Resort in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., with celebrations Oct. 11–15. Raytheon employee volunteers from across the company conducted hands-on science demonstrations at the thrill ride for students of all ages last week to commemorate the occasion.
Hundreds of students and their families flowed into the Sum of all Thrills demonstration area each day to interact with employee engineers, take part in the various science activities and then experience the ride. Guests hailed from all across the United States, as well as countries such as Peru, Columbia, Argentina, Switzerland, England, and the United Arab Emirates — making the anniversary a truly global event.
Outrageous Experiments
Raytheon engineers demonstrated three simple but fun experiments designed to bring math and science alive. A gooey mixture of corn starch suspended in water — a.k.a. Outrageous Ooze — demonstrated the principles of colloids and viscosity. Another experiment explored the difference between acids and bases by polishing pennies with lemon juice and other liquids, delighting students in the process. The final experiment, which also featured pennies, dealt with the surface tension of water and the principles of hydrogen bonding.
“I think everyone enjoyed the interactions,” said Joe Ross, one of four Raytheon volunteer engineers who conducted the demonstrations. “We had everyone from an 8-year-old who wanted to be a theoretical physicist to kids whose favorite subject was recess.”
According to volunteer Dawn Allen, the children “were really excited by the science of the activities. Their facial expressions and reactions were fabulous, especially when they saw how lemon juice and soda could polish up a penny.”

Shades of Green Upgraded
To coincide with the one-year anniversary of Sum of all Thrills, Raytheon upgraded the Family Technology Center at Shades of Green®, an Armed Forces Recreation Center located at the Walt Disney World® Resort. Donated by Raytheon, the center was outfitted with six additional computers for use by active and retired military personnel and their families. Raytheon also committed to a one-year sponsorship of the Wounded Warrior Suite, a hotel suite designed for wounded soldiers.
A character breakfast at Shades of Green® featuring the likes of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Cinderella and Snow White rounded out the week.
Securing STEM Talent for the Future
Raytheon is committed to improving STEM education in the U.S. Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics form the foundation of the global economy. Yet if current educational trends in the U.S. continue, fewer qualified candidates will be available to support our nation’s growth in these and other areas. As part of Raytheon's MathMovesU program, Sum of all Thrills supports this commitment to secure STEM talent for the future.
