During the week of Sept. 27, 2010, Raytheon will be sponsoring a national broadcast across NBC platforms and programs, “Education Nation.” The program, coupled with a two-day summit hosted in New York City, focuses on the plight of education in America, why it matters to the economy and our future, and how we can reimagine and improve education.
More than 300 leaders from government, business, school administrations, as well as parents and students, will converge on Rockefeller Plaza at a summit to undertake a challenge to promote and advance the education system. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, Delaware Governor Jack Markell, Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, Harlem Children Zone CEO Geoffrey Canada, and civil rights activist Al Sharpton are some of the leaders who will be spearheading the call to action to reinvigorate education. Other partners of “Education Nation” include The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, University of Phoenix, The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation, American Express, Tishman Speyer and Scholastic.
Raytheon's STEM Initiatives
According to the Broad Foundation, American students rank 25th in math and 21st in science when compared to 30 other industrialized countries. Raytheon concentrates its initiatives and giving on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education. Among other efforts, Raytheon’s MathMovesU® program and interactive website are designed to inspire middle school students to explore and discover the endless opportunities of an education and a potential career in a STEM discipline. The MathMovesU scholarship and grant program alone provides more than $1 million in annual funding to students and teachers.
Raytheon will be exhibiting its MathMovesU program at the summit, which in addition to panels and discussions, will display the latest innovations and technology that can help jumpstart teaching and learning.
