President Barack Obama hosted the winners of the 2010 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition in the Oval Office on June 28. It was the 10th straight year that the winners were honored at the White House.
Honorees included MATHCOUNTS national individual champion Mark Sellke and runner-up Shyam Narayanan, as well as the national championship team from California and their coaches. The 2010 Raytheon MATHCOUNTS National Competition took place May 7, 2010, in Orlando. Raytheon will serve as the competition’s title sponsor through 2014.
Words of Encouragement
President Obama praised the finalists for their outstanding achievements and commitment to academic excellence, and recognized the volunteer coaches for their invaluable service to the MATHCOUNTS program. The president also encouraged the students to continue to develop their special abilities in mathematics for both themselves and the good of the nation.
"That President Obama took the time to recognize the achievements of these outstanding students is a testament to the importance of math education in this country,” said Lou DiGioia, MATHCOUNTS executive director. “We know the president is a big proponent of mathematics literacy, and we're honored by his administration's support."
MathMovesU Initiative
Raytheon’s support of MATHCOUNTS is a component of its MathMovesU program, an initiative designed to engage U.S. middle school students in math and science through interactive learning programs, contests, events, scholarships, tutoring programs and more. The MathMovesU scholarship and grant program alone provide more than $1 million in annual funding to students and teachers.
