Raytheon has again been named among the Best Places to Launch a Career by BusinessWeek magazine, this year ranking above all listed aerospace and defense suppliers. Raytheon ranked #24 in 2009, up from #30 in 2008.

The magazine’s ranking identifies companies that provide a superior workplace for entry-level employees. Raytheon has made the list each year since it was launched in 2006. For its 2009 study, BusinessWeek raised the bar on criteria for inclusion while reducing the number of eligible employers, making its ranking more competitive and exclusive.

In a special online report, BusinessWeek highlights Raytheon’s Leadership Development Program, a two-year program that rotates new employees through different positions across multiple businesses and locations in the areas of business development, communications, contracts, engineering, finance, human resources, information technology and supply chain. The program includes several professional development opportunities such as enterprise-wide program seminars and executive and peer mentoring.

BusinessWeek’s profile on Raytheon underscores several key facts about the company including:

  • Entry-level hiring in 2009 is up 13 percent over last year
  • The company’s three-year retention rate for entry-level employees is 71 percent
  • Mentorship program participation among entry-level employees is 75 percent

The BusinessWeek project includes surveys of: career services directors at U.S. colleges; more than 60,000 U.S. undergraduates who were asked to identify their most desirable employers; and the employers themselves. A complete explanation of the magazine’s methodology can be found on its website.
