As a responsible company, Raytheon is committed to conserving energy, protecting the environment and encouraging environmental best practices. In a word, we are committed to sustainability.

This commitment is not new. In fact, the company is an industry leader, with a proud legacy in our workplace, our communities and our world. Sustainability is a part of stewardship and another example of Raytheon corporate responsibility.

Being sustainable means that we operate our facilities and engineer our processes, products and services to maximize efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. We apply waste minimization strategies to eliminate, reuse and recycle our wastes. We strive to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.

Raytheon’s commitment to sustainability is symbolized by the “leaf” insignia, which can be seen to represent the environment, renewal, global responsibility and preserving natural resources.

Sustainability has many dimensions, including energy conservation, environmental protection, waste reduction, smart procurement and community outreach. The two areas we are highlighting in 2009 are: energy conservation and waste reduction.

Energy Conservation

Approximately 90 percent of Raytheon’s greenhouse gas emissions come from energy consumption. Therefore, the company has placed considerable emphasis on reducing energy usage through conservation, energy management, increased energy efficiency and renewable power sources.

In 2002, Raytheon became a charter member in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Climate Leaders program, and since then has established ambitious goals to reduce energy consumption and associated greenhouse gas emissions.

In 2008, the company met and exceeded its long-term Climate Leaders goal by reducing its emissions 38 percent, normalized by revenue; and did it one year early. Part of the success can be attributed to the active involvement of Raytheon’s employees – as 21,000 qualified as Energy Citizens last year. Raytheon’s energy program is well recognized in both the public and private sectors, and the company has been honored by the EPA with an ENERGY STAR Award in each of the last three years.

Waste Reduction

Raytheon shows respect for our environment by applying waste minimizing strategies to eliminate the generation of wastes wherever feasible. Where wastes cannot be eliminated, we seek to reuse the materials, or recycle the waste. Since 1998, the company has reduced the volume of solid waste it generated by 55 percent, normalized by revenue. In 2008, more than 11,000 tons of materials were recycled, ranging from paper to glass to metals, representing 59 percent of our total wastes.

The company is a partner in the EPA’s WasteWise program, which helps members meet goals to reduce and recycle solid waste. In the last decade, Raytheon has implemented hundreds of waste reduction and recycling programs.
