More than 5,000 women from across New England attended the fifth annual Massachusetts Conference for Women, held Dec. 10, 2009, at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.
This year’s theme was “Rethink Resolve Renew,” instilling confidence and a new found determination to rethink, resolve and renew your career in these tough economic times. The event served as a forum for women to network, discover professional opportunities, and exchange personal experiences on life and career.
For the fifth consecutive year, Raytheon supported the event as a corporate sponsor. Rebecca Rhoads, chief information officer, Keith Peden, senior vice president of Human Resources and Pam Wickham, vice president of Corporate Affairs and Communications, hosted a company breakfast to kick-off the event, with guest speaker Dr. Gaby Cora who spoke on finding a healthy work-life balance. More than 200 Raytheon women attended the kick-off event. A donation of $2,500 was also made by Raytheon to MATHCOUNTS in honor of the conference.
The keynote speaker at the breakfast, Dr. Gaby Cora, is a wellness doctor and coach and president of the Executive Health & Wealth Institute. Cora is a medical doctor with a master’s degree in business administration and is a best-selling author of “The Power of Wellbeing.”
Cora was joined by more than 60 other powerful speakers throughout the conference, including Raytheon’s own Pam Wickham who is a Massachusetts conference board member. Wickham hosted the discussion panel, “Doing Your Best Marketing in the Worst of Times,” a session that taught women how to create a practical marketing plan to generate business.
Inspiring, Dynamic Speakers
The morning’s session featured remarks from Tory Johnson, best-selling author and CEO of Women for Hire, and Ruth Simmons, president of Brown University.
Following the opening keynote, attendees were given the option of 20 various breakout sessions throughout the day. Sessions covered topics ranging from “Powerful Personal Brand Management” to “Enhancing Executive Presence” and “The New Job Security.”
The luncheon featured First Lady of Massachusetts Diane Patrick; Brittany Berguist, the “Be The Change” award winner; and best-selling author and finance expert Suze Orman. Patrick spoke to the power of women and how she has helped her husband achieve his success; and 19-year-old Brittany Berguist spoke on the charity, “Cell Phones for Soldiers,” and how she started the organization with her younger brother in 2004. Berguist was recognized with the 2009 “Be The Change Award” – an award given to a Massachusetts woman who shows compassion for her community and dedication to improving the everyday lives of her peers. Orman delivered a high-energy, inspiring speech to the women at the event, encouraging them to take control of their personal finances and be prepared for unexpected circumstances in life.
Lessons Learned
Understanding self-value, work-life balance, and the power of philanthropy were common themes that resonated throughout the day. Each speaker inspired attendees to own their successes and encourage others to do the same, addressing issues of personal finances, family and positive world change.
