Raytheon is celebrating Earth Day with the announcement that it has been selected by InfoWorld for its Green 15 Awards for 2009. This “Green IT” industry award is Raytheon's second this year.
Companies around the world have embraced green technology to drive projects and develop products aimed at boosting energy efficiency, trimming waste and reducing or eliminating the use or the production of harmful substances. The InfoWorld Green 15 Awards recognize the 15 most innovative Information Technology (IT) initiatives that fall under this umbrella of sustainability. This honor is part of InfoWorld’s Green 15 special feature, which was published today on InfoWorld.com.
"I am very proud of our Green IT team and of all the Raytheon employees who support energy efficiency and other 'green' practices around our company," said Rebecca Rhoads, Raytheon’s chief information officer. "This is another example of Raytheon innovation and of IT partnering with our businesses, functions and customers in the interest of corporate responsibility and the wider community."
In 2008, an enterprisewide team of strategists and Green IT experts designed a strategy to align with Raytheon’s sustainability goals. This comprehensive approach focuses on making IT operations as energy efficient as possible. By helping other functions leverage IT to make their processes more sustainable, and using the Raytheon Six Sigma, IT is driving our "green" culture transformation. The strategy defines a detailed multiyear plan and an initial set of initiatives that have resulted in millions of dollars in savings for 2008. It has already had a broad impact on Raytheon's stewardship goals by helping the company achieve its greenhouse gas reduction goal one year early.
More important than dollar savings, however, is that the strategy builds a foundation for sustainable technology, leveraging IT capabilities to reduce Raytheon’s carbon footprint, helping employees make greener decisions, and creating a sustainable culture with long-lasting positive impact. Committed leadership, excellent partnerships and a willing and knowledgeable team were keys to success.
"This year's Green 15 Award winners demonstrate, once again, that green IT projects can be a win-win proposition," said Ted Samson, senior analyst at InfoWorld. "These organizations have not only helped the planet by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving trees and keeping e-waste out of landfills, they've also reaped measurable business benefits, such as significantly lower electricity bills, fewer hardware refreshes and postponed datacenter-expansion projects — along with gains in efficiency and productivity."
Raytheon was also honored on April 15, 2009, for corporate leadership in IT energy efficiency as one of Uptime Institute’s 2009 "Global Green 100." The award was recently announced in New York City during the Green Enterprise IT Awards event co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.
