Raytheon’s sustained effort and commitment to math and science education was seen across the enterprise in 2008 through the company’s innovative initiative; MathMovesU.

Through its philanthropic programs, Raytheon has invested heavily in math and science education in promoting and engaging students in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) disciplines; not only through scholarship money, but through employee engagement as well.

New Scholarships

In 2008, Raytheon re-launched its annual $1 million scholarship program to align participation and incentives with middle school and college students interested in and pursuing STEM disciplines. The scholarship program also honors “Math Heroes” or teachers and tutors. The revised program includes:

Middle School students:

  • 150 students winning $1000 scholarships to be used towards school or a math, science or technology summer camp/program approved by Raytheon and Scholarship America, with matching grants made to the students’ middle schools.
  • The application process includes multimedia submissions that illustrate the importance of math in the applicant’s topic of interest.

College students:

  • MathMovesU scholarship winners studying a STEM major are eligible to win one of thirty $20,000 scholarships.

Teachers/tutors:

  • 32 “Math Hero” teachers or tutors are being awarded $2,500 each, with a matching gift made to the professional’s school/program.

New World on MathMovesU.com

The "travel" world was added to MathMovesU.com this year, as well as MMU TV. The site is averaging over 1,000 visitors a day, and has had 265,000 unique visitors to the site so far.

Events

In addition to the MathMovesU Scholarship program, Raytheon MathMovesU efforts are also present in the communities in which its employees work and live. Across the enterprise, more than 40,000 students were reached through 105 enterprise-wide MathMovesU events and sponsorships, including: The Hall at Patriots Place presented by Raytheon, FIRST Robotics teams, Team American Rocketry challenge and the NASA Future Forums. In addition to these events, Raytheon’s sponsorship and three-year commitment as title sponsor of the national MATHCOUNTS Competition began in the 2008 academic school year. All of these events shared the common goal of promoting math and science education to students.

Engaged Employees

Behind the successes of these events and sponsorships, stood more than 4,000 Raytheon employees. Employee volunteers celebrated National Engineers Week with MathMovesU in California, Texas, Massachusetts and Florida and acknowledged Pi Day with schools across the country. NCS and IIS employees presented MathMovesU at the Texas State fair this summer. RMS employees sponsored middle school girls to attend MISS Adventures Camp and also supported a MathMovesU Day in Arizona. SAS employees continued their support of STEM After School Experiences Program in Los Angeles; and NCS employees brought Tampa Bay Rays baseball players to a local middle school to teach students about math on the baseball field. IDS employees are engaged in Stand and Deliver, a unique mentoring and tutoring initiative.

Raytheon and its employees continue to raise awareness and excite tomorrow’s engineers and technologists by teaching them the importance of STEM disciplines today!
