Mark Russell, Raytheon vice president of Engineering, Technology and Mission Assurance, was one of the defense industry leaders invited to address the 2009 Energy, Environmental Defence and Security Conference (E2DS '09) in London (Nov. 5-6).
More than 150 influential international technologists and environmentalists — across government, industry and academia — attended E2DS '09 to discuss the aerospace and defense industry’s vital emerging role in combating climate change.
In his talk, Russell discussed the importance of leveraging the defense industry’s system-of-systems knowledge to better understand, predict and respond to environmental issues. To illustrate the point, Russell provided examples of Raytheon capabilities and programs in this area. These included:
- SIVAM (System for the Vigilance of the Amazon), as a deployed system-of-systems approach that Raytheon developed in defense of the Amazon
- Raytheon’s weather- and climate-related capabilities and systems such as the Oceans Observatories Initiative, Advanced Weather Interactive Processing System, and Raytheon's Aerosol Polarimetry Sensor
- CASA (Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere), as a system-of-systems vision highlighting Raytheon’s role in this National Science Foundation Engineering Center; CASA aims to revolutionize our ability to observe, understand, predict and respond to weather hazards by creating Distributed Collaborative Adaptive Networks (DCAS) networks that sample the atmosphere where and when end-user needs are greatest.
Russell concluded his remarks by reinforcing that "Raytheon is providing solutions to enable us to understand the world around us ... on land, at sea, under the sea, in the air, and in space. We have the talent to solve hard, system-of-systems problems. What we need to do is to better explain how the aerospace and defense industry, as a whole, can address some of the environmental problems we are facing."
