RTSC’s Feola Cited for Outstanding Service in Antarctica

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty, led by then-U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower and  co-signed by 11 other country leaders. Sam Feola, Raytheon Technical Services Polar Services Director, accepted an award on behalf of Raytheon at the Antarctic Treaty Summit gala held at the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., Dec. 1. The award was presented by the scientific community for Feola’s outstanding service in Antarctica and for upholding the treaty’s peaceful mission.

The Antarctic Treaty was created and ratified in 1959 to ensure that Antarctica “shall be used only for peaceful purposes … insuring that this same kind of cooperation for the benefit of all mankind shall be perpetuated.” While unrest and war continued in some parts of the world and indeed continue today, the tenets of the treaty have been upheld for five decades and counting.

Antarctic Summit Attracts Wide-Ranging Participants

The Antarctic Treaty Summit was held in Washington, D.C. Scientists, legislators, administrators, lawyers, historians, educators, executives, students and others convened to assess lessons learned during the past five decades and to build public awareness of this historic achievement in science and humanity.

Feola currently serves as Raytheon’s Polar Services program director for a contract with the National Science Foundation. Raytheon provides life support and logistics that allow scientists to not only conduct important work but also to stay alive. Feola first worked in Antarctica as a Navy helicopter pilot in 1976. He has since travelled to Antarctica more than 40 times.

The Raytheon Polar Services team is currently negotiating a one-year extension to its contract in Antarctica, which would bring the total contract value to $1.8 billion.
