Make math visual, physical, audible, real: I encourage students to come at mathematics from all angles, including using manipulatives, art and music. They love Vi Hart videos on Khan Academy, where they can make drawings of a favorite pet, say, to create their own Apollonian gaskets (bounded infinities), Hilbert curves and fractal trees for the classroom. While studying Fibonacci Sequences, we’ve listened to various number sequences set to music on the Online Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences (OEIS.org). Showing how math connects to, or touches, just about everything in the world important to my students makes sense to them and to me as their teacher.”
