I have discovered through my experience with students of all levels that none of them are too sophisticated for manipulatives. I have used Play-Doh to teach the concept of integration, the area under the curve, to my Calculus class by cutting the rectangles to illustrate Riemann sums. My Calculus students also greatly enjoy it when I use M&M’s to teach derivatives. Of course, the fact that we have to eat the M&M’s over the course of several days as the level of difficulty increases just serves to remind them that by saying, “Let’s not forget the peanut,” the chain rule will be applied correctly.”
