Math Hero Profile - Rochelle Leininger

Budgets may be an obvious use of math in the real world, but what does math have to do with beauty and attraction, a focus of my adolescent charges? The concept of beauty can be explored using symmetry and proportion, so my students use ratios, proportions, and similar figures in our Barbie Lab. This project involves measuring a Barbie Doll and using a proportion to convert these measurements to life-size. Then we measure each other to compare our measurements to those of a Barbie Doll. Next we convert our measurements to Barbie-size and draw a scale model of what we would look like as a doll. Finally we record our results in a letter to Mattel. Students are engaged in this authentic assessment, and often our conversations lead to many teachable moments.
