As part of its efforts to engage students in math and science, Raytheon partnered with the University of Arizona College of Education and Tucson Values Teachers to launch a unique internship program. Ten high school math and science teachers worked at the company over the summer. The objective was to create stronger bonds between the classroom and the workplace by giving them hands-on work experience to take back to their classrooms.
Jennie Elrod, a 29-year-old high school math teacher, spent her summer assigned to the group preparing for last month’s successful Standard Missile-6 test. Because of her role on the program, she was invited to watch the test at White Sands in New Mexico at the end of August. Elrod saw how the Raytheon team used many of the skills that she is trying to teach her students through mathematics. She says she’ll be taking that back to her classroom and she’ll look at incorporating some of what she observed into her lesson plans to make learning more authentic and memorable for her students.
The internship program is part of the company’s larger MathMovesU initiative designed to excite and interest students in math and science. With science and technology a vital driver of the global economy, the Raytheon program not only encourages and supports countless students, but also supports our nation's ongoing role as an economic leader. "We're investing our resources creatively to help make a difference," said Dr. Taylor W. Lawrence, president of Raytheon Missile Systems. "Ultimately, we want to spark students' imaginations about the potential of math and science and one of the best ways to reach tomorrow's innovators is through their teachers."
