Raytheon Company’s development of a radiation detection system to assist U.S. border authorities in airports, seaports and border crossings was the focus of a recent article in The Boston Globe.
The systematic innovation, known as an advanced spectroscopic portal (ASP), represents an effective nuclear detection system that repurposes technologies which have already proven successful in defense applications. Unlike older technologies put in place at ports after September 11, ASP will allow border security officials to not only detect nuclear materials in the many trucks, railcars and shipping containers they screen each day, but also differentiate between naturally occurring radiation and a threat source.
The Globe article takes an in-depth look at Raytheon’s partnered approach to this program and focuses on the company’s increased involvement with the Department of Homeland Security.
