Raytheon engineers honored for Air and Missile Defense Radar

The National Defense Industrial Association has named Raytheon winner of the 2015 System Engineering Excellence Award. The company was honored for its work on the Air and Missile Defense Radar – the U.S. Navy’s next-generation, scalable radar, which enhances a ship’s ability to detect and counter a variety of threats.

The annual award – named in honor of Lt. Gen. Thomas R. Ferguson, Jr. – is given to a team that demonstrates outstanding achievement in the application and implementation of systems engineering principles. It was presented on Oct. 26, at this year’s Systems Engineering Conference in Virginia.

“This award is a prestigious honor, recognizing the results that our team achieved through the implementation of innovative and proven best practices in systems engineering,” said Raytheon Senior Principal Systems Engineer Tatiana Wegel. “Across all disciplines, the talent and expertise of our team delivered outstanding performance on AMDR.”

Raytheon’s systems engineering contributions helped AMDR achieve significant cost savings, largely due to new and enhanced processes, including Agile engineering techniques. This approach, with its emphasis on collaboration, adaptability and early delivery present the perfect platform for results-oriented designers.

“Agile promotes accelerated development, early risk mitigation and increased software maturity – driving productivity and software quality,” said Jim Burgarella, Raytheon’s AMDR systems engineering lead. “The pace of Agile speeds the cycle time from development to simulation, the frequency of deliveries into system integration, and the cadence of overall program progress.”

Raytheon’s AMDR Systems Engineering team has been integral to the naval program’s successful start in 2014 and its progress to date. The team has been a key contributor to the delivery of more than 100,000 lines of tactical software in only 18 months. AMDR continues to meet technical performance measures and is on-track for future milestones.

By applying innovative and enhanced processes, Raytheon has significantly contributed to the achievement of AMDR program cost savings, on schedule deliverables and increased mission capabilities.

“We’re seeing the program progress continually and the capabilities of this complex radar mature, evolve and deliver,” said Raytheon’s Tad Dickenson, director and AMDR program manager. “The program remains on track, thanks in large part to the outstanding work of this dedicated – and now award-winning - team of experts.”

AMDR is planned to be deployed on the U.S. Navy’s DDG-51 Flight III destroyer in 2019.
