Sensing systems, such as the APG-79 Active Electronically Scanning Array radar, the AN/ASQ-228 Advanced Targeting Forward-Looking Infrared system, and the ALR-67(V) 3&4 fourth-generation radar warning receiver, work in harmony to keep the air crew safe, protect the aircraft, and accomplish the mission. Raytheon weapon systems for the Super Hornet include the Joint Standoff Weapon, the Paveway III laser-guided bomb, the AMRAAM medium-range air-to-air missile and the AIM-9X Sidewinder short-range air-to-air missile, which achieved initial operational capability in 2003.
