Rebecca Rhoads, Raytheon vice president and chief information officer, was recently named a Distinguished Alumnus for 2008 by California State Polytechnic University's College of Engineering at Pomona, Calif. The Distinguished Alumni honor recognizes outstanding professional achievement, community service and service to the recipient's alma mater. Rhoads holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in electrical engineering from the university.

As Raytheon CIO, Rhoads provides counsel to senior management and is responsible for IT’s strategy, functions, processes and people companywide. Outside of work, she serves on the Aerospace Industries Association’s e-Business Executive Steering Group, the CIO Editorial Advisory Board, the IBM Board of Advisors, the Advisory Council for the CIO Center for Leadership, and as a trustee on the Massachusetts Technology Leadership council.

In her acceptance remarks, she noted that her time at Cal Poly Pomona provided the ultimate foundation for career growth, because it taught her how to think analytically and how to be a problem solver. She spoke affectionately about the supportive and nurturing environment and genuine camaraderie among the student body.

Rhoads is a believer in career reinvention and risk taking. During her 20 years in engineering, she sought stretch projects that took her out of her comfort zone and forced her to learn new approaches and techniques. Nine years ago, she moved into the unfamiliar world of information technology.

In closing, Rhoads explained that she is extremely proud of her work at Raytheon, because what the company does ultimately helps ensure that our men and women in the field achieve their missions and come home safely.
