MathMovesU.com is extending its virtual online shopping spree through the end of October. During September, thousands of users played online games at the MMU Mall Virtual Back-to-School Shopping Spree.
“Users really liked the online math games that helped them solve retail shopping scenarios,” said Jennifer Chan, Raytheon’s manager of Community Relations. “So we decided to extend the online experience with different math problems.”
To reflect the extension of time, the activity is now called the MMU Mall OctoberFest Virtual Shopping Spree. Users enter virtual retail outlets, including electronics and clothing stores; each store contains 10 math problems. Once a user completes all the problems in a store, they’re automatically entered into a random drawing for a chance to win a prize. Ten $100 American Express gift cards are up for grabs.
Raytheon’s MathMovesU initiative is designed to engage middle school students in math by illustrating the connection between math and “cool” careers. Raytheon believes that tomorrow’s engineers need to be excited by math today.
