MATHMOVESU KICKS OFF SUMMER CAMP

This summer, you can challenge your children to sharpen their math skills by registering them in Camp MathMovesU. Camp MMU is an online contest that encourages kids to whitewater raft, rock climb, horseback ride and mountain bike their way through a series of math problems.

The camp, which kicks off July 12 and ends Aug. 24, will present a series of math questions each week. Contestants who answer a total of 20 problems will automatically be entered in a random drawing for weekly prizes. Prizes include Nintendo Wii and Sony Play Station 2 video game systems, a portable DVD player, a Karaoke machine, a metal detector and a remote-controlled boat. With the exception of Corporate Communications staff, all Raytheon employees and their relatives are eligible to enter the Camp MMU contests.

“Camp MMU is a good way to educate and entertain kids at the same time,” said Kristin Hilf, Raytheon’s vice president of Community Relations. “Our research shows that students forget much of their math lessons over the summer and spend a significant amount of time in the fall on review.”

MathMovesU is working to reverse the national trend in declining math scores among middle school students by showcasing how math connects to “cool” people, careers and experiences. Studies have shown that students begin losing interest in math during their middle school years.
