Thermal Emission Imaging System (THEMIS)

Mapping Martian mineralogy and hydrothermal activity, helping to determine suitable landing sites on Mars.

THEMIS is an imager on NASA’s Mars Odyssey 2001 Orbiter Mission. THEMIS acquires data in nine infrared bands from 6.5 to 15.5 µm at 100m resolution. These images are used to map mineralogy and search for hydrothermal activity.

Raytheon also integrated the Malin Space Science Systems Visible Imaging Sensor (VIS) into THEMIS. Using the VIS, THEMIS provides visible images with 20m resolution in 5 bands from 0.4 to 0.8 µm.

The imagery and data from THEMIS was instrumental in the selection of landing sites for the subsequent Mars Exploration Rover (MER) sample collection and return missions.
