A leading supplier of space qualified systems for civil and military use, Raytheon Space and Airborne Systems applies its broad domain knowledge to meet complex and critical needs.

Raytheon is the largest provider of space sensors, with a 40-year history of successful space missions.

Current programs include Risk Reduction for the Alternate Infrared Satellite System (RR-AIRSS), which calls for SAS to design and build a large-focal-plane-array sensor payload capable of full-Earth imaging from a geosynchronous missile warning satellite. Another program is Space Tracking & Surveillance System (STSS) Block 6, which will include two Raytheon infrared sensor suites: a wide-view acquisition refractive sensor for boostphase detection and a narrowview sensor that tracks delivery vehicles through the middle of their trajectories in space.

To date, SAS’ success in space-based sensors include more than 100 sensors launched, with weights ranging from 2.1 to 377 kg. These sensors have performed for more than 450 instrument years in space with more than 400 years infrared experience on-orbit.

Every military sensor launched has greatly exceeded its required on-orbit lifetime, with 100% successful turn-on after launch.

Space missions include:

  • ISR Sensor Payloads
  • ISR Overhead Surveillance
  • Missile Defense
  • Near Space
  • Planetary Missions
  • Operationally Responsive Space
  • Space Control
  • Weather/Water/Climate
