Intermediate-Range Area Defense Systems
Intermediate-range area defense systems are based on the “international missile” — NATO’s Evolved SeaSparrow Missile (ESSM) (links to a product page) — and its ground-launched derivative. The ESSM family provides for ship and local area defense against anti-ship missiles, aircraft and surface threats. ESSM protects more than 120 naval platforms around the globe.
Intermediate-range area defense systems include ESSM and the MK 29 Launch System, MK 56 Vertical Launch System, and MK 41 Vertical Launch System.
